I came across a music blog (link provided below) ranking the Top 20 albums of all time, and being of an age that qualified me to buy many of these as soon as they came out at the record store (that’s what we called them then), I was surprised to find that many of my old favorites made the list. I think the blogger used pretty good logic too - here they are, in reverse order to add to your suspense:
#20. Faith - George Michael
#19. Appetite For Destruction - Guns N' Roses
#18. Purple Rain - Prince
#17. Houses Of The Holy - Led Zeppelin
#16. Born In The U.S.A. - Bruce Springsteen
#15. Nevermind – Nirvana
#14. Van Halen - Van Halen
#13. Rumours - Fleetwood Mac
#12. The Wall - Pink Floyd
#11. The Joshua Tree - U2
#10. Metallica - Metallica
#9. Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin
#8. Hotel California - Eagles
#7. The White Album - The Beatles
#6. Led Zeppelin IV - Led Zeppelin
#5. Abbey Road - The Beatles
#4. Physical Graffiti - Led Zeppelin
#3. Thriller - Michael Jackson
#2. Dark Side Of The Moon - Pink Floyd
#1. Songs In The Key Of Life - Stevie Wonder
So, what do you think of this list? First, of all, there is no denying these albums have staying power, a critical criteria of the list. Second, it would be virtually impossible for any newer release from the last 10 years or so to ever replace these, because hardly anyone buys complete albums anymore in this downloadable, digital age. But how about finding out about the albums people think are the best of all time locally? Would we put somebody like Bob Seger on there, or something by Aerosmith?
Let’s give it a try. To help us compile a list of what Plymouth and Canton residents think are the best albums of all time, submit your list of your FIVE favorite albums of all time. From your responses, we’ll compile a Plymouth-Canton Top 20. We’ll use two criteria the blogger used to determine candidates for his list - Greatest Hits and Live albums do not count. We’ll add that soundtracks, and themed compilation albums don’t count either. The person that comes the closest with their Top 5 list to the albums that are at or near the first 5 on our Top 20 list will win a 1GB iPod shuffle, courtesy of .iTownOnline, and we might be able to dig up some consolation prizes (if any potential prize sponsors are reading!!!).
Here’s the blog referenced as the source of the Top 20 list. It’s a good read!
Win an iPod Shuffle! Email us your Top 5 list (we only want 5 to make this compilation a little easier on us), with the words TOP 5 in your subject line, along with any comments about your choices you want to share. We also will need the complete artist and album name. We’ll post some of these responses that contain good commentary on occasion while the voting continues. Your return email address will be used to notify you if you are a winner.
